The obvious question first: if listening is free, where is the catch?
There is none. No subscription, no ads, no daily limits, no payment details. The whole catalogue is open, at full length and full quality. You only need an account if you want to keep track of something. This is not a promotion and not an entry price that goes up later.
Why it works
Because the money comes from somewhere else. The Riff does not depend on as many people as possible keeping a subscription for as long as possible. The platform is carried by our events and by Trou de clé, the collective's art platform. Whoever buys something there, or stands in a room on one of those evenings, helps pay for everyone else's listening.
That direction is a decision, not a workaround. A subscription would have forced us to ask every day how to keep people subscribed — with recommendations, with notifications, with the whole apparatus that turns attention into revenue. That is precisely what we did not want to build.
What it means for the music
Every track is freely licensed and free of collecting-society claims. That is not a detail: it means we can show music without triggering a billing chain on every play, and that the musicians themselves decide what runs here. They apply, we listen, and they keep their rights.
People choose the music. No algorithm, no artificially generated sound. That is slower and it scales badly, and we accept both. A list someone put together sounds different from one calculated out of listening times — you notice by the third hour at the latest.
And the clubs
Clubs close every month. That is the second reason The Riff exists. We bring musicians into the rooms that are still there, Berlin first and Europe after that. What you listen to here shapes who plays there: we see which music runs in which region, and we invite exactly those people.
That is the circle we want to close. You listen to someone for weeks while you work. Then that same person stands in a room in your city, and you already know the pieces.
What we give up for it
Predictability. A subscription brings in the same sum every month; events and art sales do not. In exchange we have no investors behind us and no growth target that will force us, a year from now, to put up a paywall after all.
If you like that: listening is free, and so is an account. If you make music, send it to us. And if you have a room where an evening could happen, write to us.
